3 Ways to Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy Naturally

There are few things outside of our children and families that our culture loves more than its pets. In fact, some survey companies estimate that Americans alone spend over 4 billion dollars each year on their animal companions (and that is in a "down" economy!) While you may not want to pamper your pooch to the tune of 4 billion dollars or even a 4 thousand, you probably are interested in anything that you can do to keep them healthy and happy as long as possible.

There are a lot of ways to do this, but many of the best ways are based in natural health and common sense. Here are three things that you can do to prolong your dog's life and keep them enjoying every waking moment of the day.

1. Make sure they get enough exercise.

Even lazy dogs and old dogs need their daily walk, and they will be happier and better behaved when they get it. Just like exercise releases endorphins in humans that make us feel happy and optimistic after a workout, dogs get the same natural "high" from playing hard or taking a stroll around the block. Make sure that your dog gets some type of exercise every day, whether it is a quick jaunt on the leash or just a good game of fetch in the backyard.

2. Give them time with their "friends."

Dogs are naturally pack animals, and they get lonely just like people do. If your dog is cooped up in the house all day while you are at work or lazing around in your yard all on its lonesome, then see about setting up some play dates with other dogs that your dog gets along with. Some people even take their dogs to daycare just like children, but you do not need to go this far unless you want to. Just having a friendly companion in the same vicinity can really boost your dog's morale and make them less aggressive and demanding on your time once you do get home, although of course they are still going to be excited to see you.

3. Make sure that they are getting the right dietary supplements.

Just like humans, dogs have specific dietary needs. They can actually benefit from many of the same supplements we do. In the past few decades, doctors have begun recommending a variety of dietary supplements to help dogs live longer and happier lives. Omega 3 rich fish oil tops this list, as it can help old dogs with arthritis, improves canine vision and can even help prevent canine heart problems and improve memory that is deteriorating with age.

You should always consult your doctor before you put your dog on any dietary supplement such as fish oil. However, a good supplement for your dog may be the same one that is good for you: made from pure salmon oil and treated to have only the best omega 3 forms in it.
